Purpose of Job

Your role will be to provide my son Adam with the quality 1-1 support, personal and social assistance that he needs to enable him to access his community as well as providing support within the home.

Adam is a happy, sociable boy and 17 years old.  He has a cheeky sense of humour, sees the funny side in everything and has great communication skills. Adam loves computers, drawing and making up stories.  He enjoys going to the arcades to play games, swimming and piano lessons.  We are looking for an enthusiastic PA who is willing to research activities that they can support Adam to take part in.

Adam tires very easily and walks on his tiptoes.  He has a manual wheelchair to get around outside and will require you to push this. Adam requires support with prompting in all areas of daily living to support his independence. He also always needs supervision as he has minimal awareness of danger and can be impulsive.

Adam has a diagnosis of Autism and has related sensory issues; he doesn’t like too much noise.  He doesn’t display any aggressive behaviour, if something upsets him you will be required to reassure him and calm him.

A car driver with access to their own car is essential for the role. You will need room to put a folded manual wheelchair in your boot.

As Adam’s Personal Assistant you will work under my direction to meet his needs and will be accountable to me in all aspects of your work.  You must be reliable and be able to use your initiative. You must also be able to respect our privacy and understand the need for confidentiality in all areas of your work.

Good time keeping is extremely important as well as a passion for what you do.

As Adam’s Personal Assistant you must be able to handle the physical skills of lifting, pushing and bending.

 

Main Duties

The main duties of the job are outlined below.  However, because Adam’s needs vary on a day-to-day basis, it is extremely important that your approach to work is flexible.  You will be expected to carry out any other reasonable personal assistance tasks that we request.

Personal Assistance

  • Assisting Adam to get into his wheelchair and in and out of the car
  • Always Ensuring Adam’s safety
  • Encourage Adam’s independence
  • Prompting Adam with what needs to happen now and what he needs to do next.
  • Prompting Adam to ensure he has all the equipment he needs to take with him to activities.
  • Making Adam aware of all the choices he has in a situation
  • Supporting Adam with money to ensure he has enough money to pay and that he gets the correct change.
  • Support Adam in meal preparation, encouraging him and helping him to prepare his meals and then how to tidy away after
  • Work with us and our other staff in promoting and developing Adams independent life skills for now and the future

Social Assistance

  • To provide and assist Adam with activities of his choosing
  • To enable Adam to access his local community
  • Adam follows a halal diet, and it is important you are aware of what this means or be willing to learn

 

Person Specification

  • Able to drive and have access to a car suitable for a manual wheelchair, when folded, to go in.

JOB ROLE
To provide high quality support, domestic assistance, and companionship to me who suffers from adenomyosis, dilated cardiomyopathy, high blood pressure, suffering from stress and anxiety and going through an undiagnosed skin condition currently under skin specialists’ observation.

JOB SUMMARY
I am looking for someone friendly, honest, trustworthy, reliable, and easy to be around. You must be extremely reliable and be able to work flexible hours (sometimes at short notice) to always ensure my safety. To act as a highly professional, proactive, and safe carer and companion who will patiently and compassionately provide a range of social assistance, domestic duties, and companionship. The job involves cooking, cleaning, helping with bathing, changing clothes, pads, and bedding. I suffer from heavy monthly bleeding and during the first 10 to 12 days of my bleeding I will require a lot of physical support such as helping me to get out of bed, help me to get on and off toilet, and providing physical support during bath time involving lifting me in and out of a shower chair.

You must be willing to learn about your role as my assistant, be able to respect my privacy and dignity, understand and learn my preferences and support my choices.  I will require support in every aspect of my daily life such as running my home, leisure activities, assistance with personal care tasks, mobility, and transfers.  You must be able to always maintain confidentiality, in all areas of your work.  It is important you are in good general health to perform this role.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Domestic Tasks

  • You will be preparing my meals and drinks and support me to eat if required.
  • Making and changing my bed.
  • Domestic duties including, washing, ironing and general housework.
  • Assistance with shopping.
  • Assistance with ordering medication and medical supplies etc.
  • Provide high quality support and companionship.
  • Carry out light domestic duties including laundry and assistance in home care.
  • Assist and accompany client in their chosen activities or appointments including shopping trips.
  • Preparing meals.
  • Administer prescribed oral medication ONLY when required and under instruction.
  • Take full responsibility for the client’s wellbeing and safeguarding whilst in your care.
  • Safely escort and enable the client to engage in and enjoy social and recreational activities. This will require accompanying the client to their chosen destinations if a car driver or accessing public transport.
  • Maintain own and others health, safety, and security, including applying safe infection prevention and control measures.
  • Always maintain confidentiality.
  • Communicate effectively with the client, other members of his support team and others involved in his daily activities.
  • Undergo relevant training as required.

 

REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST

  • Arrive for work at the agreed time and telephone the client if you are going to be late or absent.
  • Personal mobile phones should only be used in emergency situations when on duty.
  • The client’s needs may vary daily and over time, therefore duties and tasks could alter accordingly and will be reviewed and amended periodically after discussion with the post holder.

We are currently recruiting for an experienced personal assistant to assist a lovely, friendly 16-year-old young gentleman who has Autism and a Learning Disability. Ayyub lives with his mum and siblings in the Fenham area of Newcastle and regularly attends a specialist school which he enjoys.

Ayyub is non-verbal and understands much more than he can communicate, he can use one word language or very short sentences to communicate his needs, desires and emotions. Routine and structure is very important to Ayyub, and due to sensory sensitivities, Ayyub can become dysregulated if it becomes too noisy, or crowded. Sensory fidgets and toys are used regularly to assist with regulation, you will know when Ayyub is becoming upset as he will refuse to engage.

Ayyub loves arts and crafts, especially play dough and colouring books; he is extremely good at reading too. He has a passion for all things musical and is very good at identifying a vast array of instruments and the sounds they produce.

Ayyub is looking for a PA who can accompany him to his chosen venues or activities, including local parks, swimming pools and activity centres like Tim Lamb or Alan Shearer Centre. He enjoys going to the trampoline park and the beach in the summer. Ayyub enjoys nature so a visit to the local nature reserves would be a great place for Ayyub to explore.

Ayyub can eat independently and enjoys dining out at Certified Halal restaurants all food consumed must be Halal based, and it is extremely important that you adhere to this.

Personal care will be required in this role for toileting needs, but only to prompt and ensure Ayyub uses the toilet.

A car driver is essential for this role as well as a good level of fitness.

We are currently looking to recruit a personal assistant who will work together with the client on shift to support her to access the community to enjoy their choice of activities, accompany them to any scheduled appointments and to assist the client with some cooking and food preparation within the home. There is no personal care involved in this role. The client likes to take care of her domestic chores herself and will not require any assistance with her day-to-day housekeeping.

Paula is a real character and loves a good giggle so a sense of humour is a must. Paula is currently being supported by the Mental Health Team who are providing her medical needs whilst promoting her independence to remain in her home, Paula is a heavy smoker and does smoke within her home environment.

Paula would eventually like to attend activities outside of her home environment and in particularly would like to enjoy, bingo, theatre trips, cinema and bowling. Paula loves her soaps and reality TV shows like Love Island, she also enjoys listening to music and is a huge fan of Sir Tom Jones, she enjoys the 50s,60s and 70s music genre, especially “Rock & Roll”, so be prepared to get your dancing shoes on and have a sing along.

Paula can also be reclusive on occasion so the ability to prompt and support her through this is required, however if she wants to be on her own you must be able to respect her wishes and know when to intervene and when not to.

There are structured plans in place to support and monitor Paula’s mental health that must be actioned should they need to be.  This would be discussed further should the applicant be successful.

This role would suit individuals who can demonstrate experience of working within the Mental Health sector and who have experience of supporting individuals who have a history of Mental Health and substance ill-use.
