Job Purpose:

The role is very much about supporting me with personal care and supporting my lovely wife who is currently my full-time carer

▪ To assist me with everyday personal care

▪ Getting me or my wife to/from medical appointments when needed

About me (the Employer):

I am a fiercely independent young man of 85 years but of late, my physical health has deteriorated and I’m unable to walk unaided. I’m looking for someone to help me maintain independence in my home who I share with my wife of 62 years. As I’m getting older, everyday personal care and mobility is becoming slower and more challenging.

Practical assistance is needed in our home for some tasks that require heavy lifting, responding to my changing needs and supporting and liaising with my wife and grown-up children.

I am looking for someone who has experience of supporting older but ‘young at heart’ individuals. I am looking for someone that I can chat with on topics in common such as wildlife, current events, football, golf and travel. This assistance is about helping me and my choices, independent living, dignity and privacy. My wife is an amazing carer and supporter but at 82, although fiercely independent, has her own health challenges.

Your role will be essential to supporting primarily my personal needs such as washing, applying creams, dressing and where needed, getting to and from medical appointments. It will also be about supporting my lovely wife with daily tasks caring for me during your time in our home.

Type of person I am looking for:

Values

  • You will be kind, honest, reliable, punctual, non-judgemental.
  • You will have the ability to build good relationships with me and my family members based on trust and respect
  • You will be flexible, adaptable, easy going, able to work alone, positive. • You will have a good sense of humour.
  • You will be someone who is easy to talk to
  • You will be a good listener
  • You will be encouraging and able to motivate
  • You will understand and respect the need for me and my wife to have personal/private time

Specific Requirements:

  • Must be local to Wrekenton, Gateshead due to the current duration of hours
  • Previous experience working in a health or social care setting
  • Good record keeping
  • Good communication
  • Understand the importance of confidentiality in your work
  • You will have an understanding of ageing and the frustrating impact this has on personal ability. This may be through personal or professional experience, or you may have had experience in providing support formally or informally for example to a family member.
  • You must have experience of an often, at short notice, change in requirements where more intensive assistance is required
  • Experienced driver with own (easily accessible) vehicle required
  • Enhanced DBS required
  • Male and female applicants will be considered.

What you can expect to receive:

  • A friendly working environment
  • Some flexibility in and times of shifts
  • Self-employed individuals preferred

This vacancy will close as soon as a suitable candidate is appointed.
