The Role

The role would be suitable for anyone undertaking online courses or who has creative work e.g. writing that they wanted to get on with themselves while the client is able to manage and will only need to have support within easy reach.

You will provide personal support to a client who suffers from periodic complete paralysis, this role will include the need to aid with toilet needs during periods of paralysis. You will be a constant presence but also able to observe without intrusion on occasion, a good relationship and highly established trust with the client and his wife.

Due to periods of complete paralysis you will need to be fit and comfortable with some manual handling. Generally this is limited to repositioning limbs and ensuring comfort, not the lifting and handling of a whole person.

Provision of transport could be a part of the role, and the ability to drive would be considered beneficial, but not essential. The client has a vehicle on which you would be able to be insured to drive, but can no longer drive themselves.

A complete and up to date DBS check is required for this role.

 

The Process

A successful applicant will need to attend an interview as a first step and then if it seems likely that the applicant may be suitable for the role a probationary period will be required under the client, and his current Personal Assistant.

I am a blind woman in my early forties, seeking a dependable, friendly, and supportive female personal assistant to help me maintain my independence and access my new local community.

 

About the role.

This is a varied and rewarding support role, involving both at-home and out-and-about tasks. Typical duties include:

  • Going for walks
  • Going swimming
  • Helping me learn to run/jog on local cycle paths/countryside roots or as part of a local running group.
  • Accompanying me to medical appointments, or social events
  • Accompanying me for accessing coffee shops or local amenities
  • Assisting with clothes and occasionally food shopping
  • Helping with batch cooking
  • Organising my wardrobe, insuring outfits are easy to co-ordinate by colour.
  • Supporting me with paperwork and form filling
  • Occasionally supporting me at spa days which are my favourite thing to do.

Availability.

I require support for 6 hours per week, and I can offer flexibility with scheduling:

  • Either 2 evenings per week (typically Monday, Wednesday or Thursday, 3 hours each),
  • Or one full day on a Friday (6 consecutive hours)

We can discuss what works best for both of us.

Requirements.

  • Willingness to support physical activities like walking, jogging, or swimming at the local swimming baths or Challenor Pond.
  • Respect for personal boundaries and confidentiality.

You must be a driver with a full clean driving licence. Experience with visual impairment is preferred but not essential as I can provide guidance and training. You do not need to be a trained guide runner for the visually impaired; I can train you as we go.

I enjoy visiting places such as the clothes exchange in Leeds.

 

About the role:

It is important to me that the role is approached from an adaptable and flexible viewpoint. Some days I may require more support than others.

The role is very much about doing things together. I do not require a carer or someone to do things for me.

 

About You

You will be calm and encouraging with the ability to read situations where I may be feeling overwhelmed.

You will be able to break down tasks into small simple instructions.

You will have an understanding on how autism affects girls/women or a willingness to learn.

You will have good communication skills.

Ideally you will be someone with an interest in health and fitness, possibly enjoy cycling, horse riding and other outdoor activities.
