Personal Assistant(s) Wanted for Dylan – Fun, Active & Supportive Role!

Meet Dylan!
He’s turning 16 this September, he’s autistic, verbal, physically able, and has a brilliant sense of humour. Dylan goes to Applefields School and is looking for supportive, fun Personal Assistants to help him get out and about.

Dylan loves:

Riding his bike (he needs a safety buddy – his road sense isn’t the best!)

Swimming

Walks in the countryside & dog walking Indoor route climbing (not bouldering)

Tenpin bowling & trampolining

Listening to stories

Crafts (when he’s in the mood!)

Spending time with animals

Dylan doesn’t enjoy:

Noisy, crowded, or over-stimulating places like restaurants, shops, or cinemas. Calm and fun is best!

The Role

We’re looking for 1 or 2 Personal Assistants to support Dylan to enjoy the activities he loves.

  • Some 2:1 support needed for physical activities
  • Ideally one PA who can drive
  • Encouraging independence while making things safe & fun
  • Offering reassurance and patience, especially when Dylan feels anxious

Who would be great for this role?

  • Energetic, kind, and fun-loving
  • Enjoys being outdoors and active
  • Happy to get stuck into adventures (and sometimes crafts!)
  • Patient, understanding, and able to give gentle encouragement
  • Experience with autism is great, but willingness to learn is just as good

Would you like to work within a family environment with a fun-loving child with physical disabilities? Our son requires a fun loving, caring and confident team of assistants to help him with everyday life within our home on Southbank in York.

Max has quadriplegic cerebral palsy coupled with a great sense of humour, loves watching football, having fun, learning and making the most of life. Max is non-verbal but immerse yourself in Max and you will soon realise how excellent he is at communicating with facial expression, eyes and his communication device.

The hours of work will vary during the year but there will be a minimum of 15 hours per week available which will increase during school holidays, weekends and evenings. We welcome applications if you can work only on certain days/hours within these times and will be seeking more than one carer to support on a job share basis and with a co-worker as Max requires 2:1 care.

Rate: £12.71 (min) per hour

Hours: 3-4 hours a week on either a Saturday or Sunday

Area: York

About the role:

Frank is a friendly and active 14-year-old who loves getting out and about in the community. He particularly enjoys visiting shops that sell balls, spending time in parks and practicing his basketball skills — he is very good at shooting hoops, and this is a big interest of his. He loves going out for coffee, cake or lunch, and enjoys family-friendly cafés, Greggs and local pubs (but not fast-food restaurants). He is naturally a very good-natured person; he is kind, caring and respectful. He can have some difficulties which are mainly caused by sensory needs, despite this though he is a very easy-going person.

Frank is fully verbal and able to express his needs; however, his language is not the same as a typically developing 14-year-old and he can find two-way conversation challenging at times. When talking, he requires processing time, shortened instructions and support to make choices.

Main duties:

  • Go with him to the park, always ensuring his safety
  • Assist him to go to different restaurants but NOT fast food!
  • Play basketball with him and help him if he requires it
  • Help him to improve his conversational skills
  • Listen to the radio with him, particularly modern pop stations
  • Assist him to cross the road and when in car parks as he struggles with this due to his learning difficulties

You’ll also provide emotional reassurance when needed and work closely with the family to deliver consistent, person-centred support.

There is no personal care required.
