Description

Female Personal Assistant (PA) required to support our daughter, who has learning difficulties and autism. The PA would be required to take our daughter out to events and activities to support her to socialise.

 

Person Requirements

We are looking for a friendly, chatty, bubbly person to assist our daughter with learning difficulties and autism.

Our daughter is friendly and chatty once she is comfortable with you. However, it is important that the Personal Assistant understands they will need to drive the conversation with her, by asking lots of questions and show encouragement. Our daughter likes to chat but can’t always think of what to say and ask, therefore the role would suit someone who is very chatty and someone who will ask her lots of questions.

 

The role

To assist with taking our daughter out to various activities including: – swimming, going to park, going to gym, shopping, bowling, cinema, theatre, art and craft sessions, museums, day trips etc.

To assist with developing our daughter’s weekly programme of activities, someone happy to make suggestions on activities she may like to take her too would be welcomed. Working with our daughter to create a regular 4 weekly plan of what they will do together.

Someone, creatively minded who would be comfortable planning and doing art/craft projects with her, as well as comfortable finding and taking her to interesting places/ trips, creative events and existing activities and sessions

Someone to support with basic personal care on occasion.

 

Degree discipline

Not essential but it may be well suited to someone from or with an interest in the health, arts and care sector. Anyone with an interest in care and supporting people with learning disabilities and autism would be great.

 

Requirements /Location

A car driver is preferred, but not essential.

Based in Wallsend, so will suit someone from North Tyneside or Newcastle.

 

Hours and Rate

8 hours a week, worked as 4 hour sessions 2 times a week.  Ideally on a Monday and Friday but there is some flexibility if these days are not suitable.

Initially the PA will begin with 4 hours for a few weeks before increase to 8 hours per week. This is to allow the lady being supported to transition to a new PA.

Additional hours may be required to cover holidays and sickness.

Employment is on a PAYE employed basis, rate of pay is £11.44 per hour.

Or arrangements can be made to work on a self-employed basis with a slightly higher rate of pay this can be discussed with individual candidates.

Mark is a lovely older gentleman looking to employ a personal assistant who will have a flexible approach to supporting him within the home and accessing the community. Mark has a diagnosis of Autism, Epilepsy and Diabetes. Mark’s epilepsy causes minor seizures, and his diabetes is managed with medication and regular blood count checks. Mark lives independently at home with the support of his sister who plays a huge part in Mark’s daily support. Mark can become tired quickly and loose concentration so you will be required to prompt Mark if this happens.

Mark enjoys playing chess and has a substantial collection of chest boards that are his pride and joy, he has a vast array of stationary and is a keen collector of books and magazines. Mark enjoys watching sports on the TV especially the horse racing. Mark enjoys a weekly visit to the local pub where he enjoys a pub meal, you would accompany Mark to his local and support him to attend any appointments that are scheduled. Mark goes shopping once a week and will require accompanying to carry out his shopping.

Mark is looking for an experienced personal assistant who has knowledge and experience of autism and experience in managing epileptic episodes and can administer his daily medical doses. This will include administering weekly injections on completion of training.

As part of your role, you will be assisting Mark with personal care, including showering and shaving, Mark will require assistance with choosing appropriate clothing and dressing.

Meal preparation will be included within your role, and you will need to ensure there is a supply of food left when you end your shift.

Some light domestic tasks will be required including, laundry and bed changing.

Car driver essential and mileage will be covered.

Job purpose:

To support our son in all aspects of his care and support. To enable him to live independently within our family home, enable him to access the leisure activities of his choosing, ensure his health care needs are met and monitored and to provide a high standard of care and support.

About the person:

You will work with our son, who is a 44 year old young man, he likes to be sociable and has a good sense of humour. He responds well to and likes a consistent staff team who he can build up trust with. He generally likes to be out and about, and he has a large wheelchair accessible vehicle (automatic). He likes going for long walks, pre pandemic he engaged in many activities including swimming, steam train rides, he has season tickets for English Heritage etc and is a season ticket holder for NUFC.

Our son has very complex learning difficulties including Autism, and complex health needs. He is PEG fed and uses cough assist and nocturnal non-invasive ventilation. Sometimes his complex learning difficulties and health needs can present challenges, so we are looking for patient and caring staff.

Due to our son’s healthcare needs he receives 2:1 support at all times. You will work as part of a team consisting of PAs and family members.

Some experience whether formal or informal is required. Further training, where necessary, will be provided.

A driving licence and the ability to drive an automatic wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) is desirable for most shifts.

He is non-verbal. There is personal care involved in this role.
