Job Title: Personal Assistant

Hours: 4 hours per week – weekend work

Rate of pay: £14.00 per hour

Location: Hazlerigg, NE13

Rowan will be 6 in May. He is a lovely little boy who thrives when he has structure, routine and clear expectations. His day to day life works best when things are planned and when adults talk through what is happening and why. If Rowan knows what is coming next, he feels much more settled. He really enjoys one to one attention and responds very well when someone spends focused time with him. He likes having an adult alongside him to guide him and help him understand what is happening around him. Rowan has a younger brother. Like many siblings they can play well together, but Rowan can sometimes become frustrated and may head-butt him when he is overwhelmed or when things do not go the way he expects. This is usually linked to his need for routine and difficulty with patience.

Rowan absolutely loves dinosaurs. He also enjoys activities where he can move and explore such as going to the Tim Lamb Centre, soft play, trampolining, and visiting places with animals like farms or zoos. One of his favourite things to do is feed the animals. Rowan is verbal and can speak well, but he will often communicate by showing you what he wants rather than always asking directly. He also likes to talk to himself and may repeat words or phrases. He is learning Makaton at school, which helps support his communication.

Rowan can find it difficult to be patient, and if his routine changes unexpectedly or something doesn’t happen the way he expects, he can become distressed and may lash out. Keeping a predictable routine and preparing him for changes helps him cope much better. When he becomes upset or overwhelmed, he uses a dummy to comfort himself and help him calm down. Rowan has Autism and Sensory Processing Disorder, which means he experiences the world a little differently. With understanding, patience, clear communication and a consistent routine, he is able to feel safe, happy and enjoy the things he loves most.
